Miami Toros
The Miami Toros, based in Miami, Florida, played in North America's top pro soccer league from 1973 to 1976. The franchise began in 1967 as the Washington Darts and moved to Miami in 1972, where it played one season as the Miami Gatos. Joe Robbie, who also owned Miami's pro football team, backed the club from 1973.
The Toros played at the Orange Bowl from 1973 to 1975, and at Tamiami Field in 1974 and 1976. Warren Archibald was league MVP and top scorer in 1973. In 1974 the team won the Eastern Division at 9-5-6 under John Young, who was Coach of the Year. It beat its way to the title game, hosted it at the Orange Bowl, and lost to Los Angeles on penalty kicks after a 3-3 draw.
In 1975 the Toros went 14-8 and reached the semifinals, and Steve David led the league with 23 goals. Attendance fell, and the 1976 team went 6-18 and averaged about 3,100 fans. After that season the franchise moved to Fort Lauderdale.
