Skyway Lake Shore Drive-In
The Skyway Lake Shore Drive-In in Athol Springs, New York, opened on July 2, 1948, with Randolph Scott in Gunfighters, a Three Stooges comedy and a color cartoon. It stood at 3999 Lake Shore Road, along Lake Erie south of Buffalo, with one screen and room for 600 cars.
It belonged to Skyway Drive-In Theatres of Buffalo, which also ran the Skyway Niagara on Niagara Falls Boulevard. The company's matchbooks are the best record of how it looked. They carry the Skyway name in script, a slogan urging people to attend the movies the modern way, and a list of the two drive-ins, with Lake Shore given as Lake Shore Road at the Circle. The promised extras included a modern refreshment pavilion and two shows a night.
The Skyway Lake Shore closed on September 15, 1985. It was torn down later, except for the car ramps and one speaker pole, and Carrier Coach and the Buffalo Tractor Trailer Institute now use the site.
