Washington Tapers T-Shirt (Heavyweight)
The Washington Tapers, based in Washington, D.C., were a charter member of the American Basketball League in 1961. Owner Paul Cohen, whose company made Tuck tape, put the team in the Washington Coliseum, where it struggled. The team grew out of an earlier Tapers club sponsored by the same tape company.
Midway through 1961-62 the team moved to Commack, New York, and became the New York Tapers. In 1962 it moved again to Philadelphia, where Mario Perri coached it at Convention Hall and it averaged about 700 fans a game. Roger Kaiser and Cleo Hill were among its players. The league folded on December 31, 1962, after the team had played 28 games, and its final game was played in Cleveland.
