Baltimore Metros

The Baltimore Metros, based in Baltimore, Maryland, played part of one season in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), in 1978-79. The franchise began in 1977 as the Washington Metros in the Eastern Basketball Association, where it went 5-26. It moved to Baltimore in 1978 and played at the UMBC Fieldhouse.

Owner Fred Keller hired Larry Cannon, a former ABA player picked fifth in the 1969 big-league draft, as coach. The Metros started 9-5. Cannon was fired in December, and Keller took over the bench himself.

The money ran out. The CBA threatened to revoke the franchise over unpaid bills, and in late January 1979 the team moved to Utica, New York, as the Mohawk Valley Thunderbirds. It went out of business before the regular season ended.
