Rochester Zeniths
The Rochester Zeniths, based in Rochester, New York, were a Continental Basketball Association (CBA) team from 1978 to 1983. The club was organized in 1977 for a short-lived league, the All-American Basketball Alliance, and went 10-1 before that league collapsed. The name came from owner Dick Hill's television store, which sold Zenith sets.
The Zeniths joined the CBA for 1978-79 and went 36-12, the league's best record. They swept the Anchorage Northern Knights in the final, and guard Andre McCarter was league MVP. They lost the 1980 final to Anchorage in seven games, then won again in 1981 after a 34-6 season, sweeping the Montana Golden Nuggets. Mauro Panaggio coached most of those years and later became the CBA's winningest coach.
Home games began at the Dome Arena in Henrietta, which had a carpeted floor, and moved to the downtown War Memorial for the last seasons. The team lost in the first round in 1982 and 1983, then closed in June 1983 after money losses and shrinking crowds.
