Iowa Cornets

The Iowa Cornets, based in Iowa and playing mostly in Cedar Rapids, were a charter team of the Women's Professional Basketball League. George Nissen bought the first franchise in the league in March 1978. The Cornets drafted Molly Bolin, a native of Moravia, Iowa, who became the first player the league signed.

In 1978-79 the Cornets went 21-13, beat Chicago in the first round and reached the final. They lost to the Houston Angels three games to two, with Houston taking the deciding game 111-104. In 1979-80 Iowa went 24-12, won the Midwest Division, beat the Minnesota Fillies and reached the final again. This time the New York Stars beat them. Bolin scored 36 points in game four. She shared the league's most valuable player award with Ann Meyers of the New Jersey Gems.

The team played at Veterans Memorial Auditorium and later at Five Seasons Center. The Cornets were disbanded after the 1979-80 season.
