Dallas Diamonds

The Dallas Diamonds, based in Dallas, Texas, joined the Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL) as an expansion team for 1979-80. They played at the Dallas Convention Center and went 7-28, including 0-17 on the road. Coach Dean Weese was fired after a 7-22 start. Mike Staver bought the team during the season.

For 1980-81 the Diamonds moved to Moody Coliseum on the SMU campus and drafted Nancy Lieberman, an Olympic medalist, with the first overall pick. Under coach Greg Williams, named WBL Coach of the Year, they went 27-9 and won their division. They beat the New Jersey Gems in the playoffs, then lost the championship series to the Nebraska Wranglers, 3-2.

The WBL folded after that season. In 1984 the Diamonds played in the Women's American Basketball Association with Lieberman and Williams, went 19-2, and won its only championship. That league also lasted one season.
