New Orleans Pride
The New Orleans Pride, based in New Orleans, Louisiana, played two seasons in the Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL), 1979-80 and 1980-81. Home games were split between the Louisiana Superdome and the University of New Orleans Field House. The opener drew a league-record crowd of 8,452, but the team averaged about 2,000 fans over the season.
Butch Van Breda Kolff, who had coached in the men's pro game, ran the bench. The Pride went 21-13 in 1979-80, led by Augusta Forest and Bertha Hardy, and lost a three-game first-round series to the Minnesota Fillies.
The 1980-81 team went 18-19 and missed the playoffs. In March 1981, with the record at 17-14, the club suspended Van Breda Kolff for the rest of the year. Assistant Ray Scott finished the season. The league folded afterward, and the Pride went with it.
