New York Stars

The New York Stars, based in New York, New York, played in the Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL) in 1978-79 and 1979-80. They started at the Mulcahy Center in New Rochelle and moved to Madison Square Garden for the second year.

The first season ended 19-15, and Houston swept them in the first round of the playoffs. Twins Faye and Kaye Young were on the roster, along with Gail Marquis, Pearl Moore and Althea Gwyn.

In 1979-80 the Stars went 28-7 under coach Dean Meminger, the best winning percentage in league history. They swept San Francisco in the semifinals and beat the Iowa Cornets three games to one for the championship. Money was tight, though. The club asked to sit out two years to rebuild, and that plan fell apart when the league folded in 1981.
