Sunbury Mercuries

The Sunbury Mercuries, based in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, played from 1947 to 1971. They were in the Eastern Pennsylvania Basketball League, which became the Eastern Professional Basketball League and later the Eastern Basketball Association. In the 1960s they played at Shikellamy High School, which held about 1,200 fans. Earlier home courts included Sunbury High School.

The Mercuries won one league title, in 1951, by sweeping the York Victory A.C. in a two-game series. Most other seasons ended in the middle or lower half of the standings.

Their best-known players came in the 1950s. Jack Ramsay played for Sunbury from 1951 to 1955 and was named to an all-league first team in 1951-52. He later coached a big-league champion and entered the Hall of Fame. Jack McCloskey also played there and later became a big-league general manager.

The team folded after the 1970-71 season. The record doesn't give a reason.
