Scranton Apollos
The Scranton Apollos, based in Scranton, Pennsylvania, were the later name of the Scranton Miners, a franchise that began in 1946 and moved to Scranton during the 1947-48 season. The Miners played in the American Basketball League until 1953, then in the Eastern league that became the Eastern Basketball Association. Arthur Pachter owned the club for many years and coached it for a long stretch. Home games were at the Scranton CYC building.
The team was renamed the Apollos in 1970. Jim Boeheim, who later became a long-time college coach, played for the Miners and Apollos from 1966 to 1972 and also coached the club. Guard Charlie Criss scored 72 points on January 25, 1976, an EBA single-game record. Scranton hosted the league's 1971 all-star game.
Records list American Basketball League titles for 1950 and 1951 and an EBA title for 1976-77. Sources disagree on a few other championship years, so those are left out here. The Apollos folded in 1977. No clear reason turned up, though costs in the league were rising.
