Yakima Sun Kings

The Yakima Sun Kings, based in Yakima, Washington, played in the Continental Basketball Association from 1990 to 2008 at the Yakima SunDome. The franchise had earlier been the Kansas City Sizzlers and then the Topeka Sizzlers. Sacramento attorney Robert Wilson bought it in 1990 and moved it, and Dean Nicholson, a local favorite, was hired as coach.

The Sun Kings won CBA championships in 1994-95, 1999-2000, 2002-03, 2005-06 and 2006-07. They were the first CBA team to show a profit. They also had a 10-38 season in 2003-04. Ronny Turiaf played nine games for the team in 2005-06 before heading back to a big-league roster.

In June 2005 the Yakama Indian Nation bought the team and renamed it the Yakama Sun Kings, using the spelling the Nation prefers. The Nation shut the team down on April 10, 2008, citing financial losses. The name came back in 2018 when a Yakima SunKings team joined a new league, North American Premier Basketball, and later The Basketball League.
