Tucson Gunners
The Tucson Gunners, based in Tucson, Arizona, played in the Western Basketball Association, which lasted one season, 1978-79. The Gunners played at the Tucson Community Center and were coached by Herb Brown, who was named the league's Coach of the Year.
Tucson finished first at 32-16, ahead of the Reno Bighorns at 28-20. The two met in the championship series, and the Gunners won it four games to three, finishing the series at home on April 2, 1979. Al Smith, Gerald Henderson and Jim Boylan were among the players linked to the team. Henderson later played in the big leagues, and Boylan later coached.
The league announced a merger with the Continental Basketball Association after the season, but the WBA did not continue, and the Gunners folded in 1979.
